Dear Mrs Sundaram

Proposal for Applied Learning Programme

Under the Applied Learning Programme for Serangoon Garden Secondary School, Our group has been tasked to design a heritage trail to help participants learn more about our story of Singapore.  Our main theme for this project is “Singapore: My Heritage, My Home”. We have highlighted three areas and my team decided to go to Hougang for our heritage trail.

We have chosen this theme because we wanted to recapture the memory and culture of some places before development takes place. Moreover, we also hope to learn more about the background of some forgotten places.

According to this theme, we have highlighted three different areas such as: Sentosa , Ang Mo Kio , and Hougang . Sentosa and Ang Mo Kio is a well-known place and there were not much hotspots that suits our theme. Hence, we decided to choose Hougang for this project.

Hougang consist of seven sub-zones such as: Hougang, Trafalgar, Rosyth, Lorong Ah Soo, Tai Keng, Defu Industrial Park and Sungei Serangoon. New Town is accessible via the Yio Chu Kang Road, Buangkok Green, Hougang Avenue 14 and Avenue 7 which links to Old Tampines Road.

In the past,Hougang was a village area where most of the people living there were Chinese immigrants community. And most of them were Teochew or Hokkien. The British Army sealed an area in Hougang which is also known as Buangkok. Now, that place is called Trafalgar and was used to house patients with chronic illness and mental disorder. The hospital for those patient was called 'Woodbridge' after a small wooden bridge beside the site. Woodbridge has since been rebuilt and renamed the Institute of Mental Health, or known as IMH.

Most of Hougang is under the power of Singapore’s ruling party, People’s Action Party (PAP). While some of the small areas in hougang is governed by Workers Party (WP) since 1991.

The junction of the Upper Serangoon Road and Upper Paya Lebar road its a place that seems to be frozen in time. Little changes were made over the decades. Our first Hotspot is the Upper Serangoon Shopping centre. This is one of many forgotten shopping centre in Singapore. This shopping centre is built in the 1970s. This old shopping centre used to be famous as they sells cheap Computer Games for almost 20 years.

Now, we have so many beautiful condominiums and HDBs that are located in Hougang. But not everyone knows about the first ever flats that was built in Hougang .The second hotspots that we will be visiting is the first flats that was built in hougang which is commonly pronounced as ow gang . This flats is established around 1980s. Most 3-rooms and 4-rooms flats were built for re-location of farmers and fisherman living in the kampong at Kangkar. This beautiful flats is also known as the rainbow flats as it was painted with certain vibrant colours, but the symbolic gigantic rainbow can be found only on the block of 316.It is painted in rainbow colours so that it easily catches the eyes of the passerby and the cheerful looking rainbow usually brings a smile to anyone walkping or driving past the block!

We will be able to watch and visit crocodile at the Singapore zoo. But not much people knows about the oldest reptile skins and crocodile farm. For our third hotspot,we will be talking about the development after the crocodile farm in upper serangoon road has closed down. After the crocodile farm closed down it will be launching into a residential development as Dr Tan Tee Khoon explained that the key attraction would be the proximity to good schools and two mrt stations as well as accesibilities to shopping malls such as NEX and eateries along simon road.

There is so many villages in Singapore last time. For our Fourth hotspot, we will be sharing with you more about Kampong Lorong Buangkok.Kampong Lorong Buangkok is established in 1956 and this village has a mixture of malay and Chinese residents living in harmony and peace. About 28 single story zinc roof houses there and the land was originally owned by Mr.Sng Teow Koon and now it was owned by his children. The postal code for Kampong Lorong Buangkok is 1954.Villages in the past used to have 4-digit postal code however, now we have 6-digits postal code.

In conclusion, Hougang is rich in culture and also a very big area. There is still many more forgotten places that is located in Hougang . I hope you will consider our proposal favorably as we have tried to meet your expectation and requirement. Thank you.

Yours Faithfully,
